A battery is an electrochemical device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy, powering small and large devices from flashlights to cars. It contains one or more electrochemical cells, each with two terminals (anode and cathode) separated by an electrolyte. Batteries can be primary (disposable, one-time use) or secondary (rechargeable) and are categorized by their physical size and type.

How it works
  • A battery works by converting stored chemical energy into electrical energy through electrochemical reactions.
  • It has two terminals, an anode and a cathode, separated by a chemical electrolyte.
  • When connected to a circuit, electrons flow from the anode, through the external circuit, to the cathode, producing an electric current.
  • Charging: is the process of passing a direct current through the battery in the opposite direction of discharge to restore its energy.
Types of batteries
  • These are “use-and-throw” batteries where the chemical reaction is irreversible. Once discharged, they must be discarded. Examples include many common household alkaline batteries.

  • These batteries can be discharged and recharged multiple times because the electrochemical reaction is reversible. Examples include the lithium-ion batteries in smartphones and the lead-acid batteries in cars.

Key terms
  • Cell:

The basic electrochemical unit of a battery.

  • A measure of the amount of charge a battery can store, often expressed in ampere-hours (Ah).

  • The chemical medium in the battery that allows ions to move between the electrodes.

  • The deterioration of metal parts due to exposure to the electrolyte’s acid.
